However, I did not want to take an unpaid position during my 1L summer. Plus, since I left a career to attend law school, I needed to select a summer opportunity that would lead to a full-time job offer. After researching various types of internship opportunities that sounded interesting, I determined that I wanted a 1L summer associate position.
At the conclusion of summer associate programs, many summer associates receive full-time job offers. Thus, summer associate positions are highly sought after and difficult to obtain, especially as a 1L. To obtain a 1L summer associate position, you need good grades.
The grade requirements for summer associate positions vary. In addition to receiving good grades, there are other steps you can take to compete for a coveted 1L summer associate position. The best way to find out what you like is to get experience. Despite this, I worked during my 1L year. I received all A's during my 1L year. Also, to help me understand which area of the law interested me, I spoke with attorneys who worked in different practice areas.
I asked attorneys what they liked and disliked about their careers. After speaking with numerous attorneys, I determined that I wanted to work in the employment law field. Eventually, an employment law firm hired me to work a few hours a week during the school year.
I had the opportunity to learn from brilliant attorneys who were willing to teach me about the law. This law clerk position helped me to determine what I wanted in a legal career. Though I enjoyed working at a small firm, I really wanted to work in a larger firm, which led me to purse summer associate opportunities with large employment law firms that represented employers.
What to know about your first summer internship
For each law firm that I applied to, I presented my application materials in presentation books. The books were assembled with a cover sheet. I asked my professors for letters of recommendation and ordered numerous law school transcripts in advance.
Addtionally, I attached my resume so that they could learn more about my professional background. I gained numerous mentors by becoming a student member of various bar associations. Also, when an attorney who worked for a firm with whom I planned to interview spoke at a particular bar association meeting, I went and introduced myself. Attending such seminars gave me several opportunities to meet attorneys with whom I hoped to work.
However, there were firms that hired 1L summer associates. I made an excel sheet with firm names, dates the applications were due, and application requirements. I had to stay organized so that I could apply for all applicable positions. In addition to researching my interviewers, I exhaustively researched the firms at which I was interviewing.
At the end of each interview, I asked questions that were specific either to the interviewer or the firm.
I wrote short thank you notes after the interview. I included one or two sentences that were specific to the interviewer. After a few weeks of waiting, I received offers and accepted a position with a large labor and employment law firm.
I worked at the firm as a 1L summer associate and received an offer to return to the firm the following summer. To learn more about firms with 1L summer associate positions, I emailed junior associates.The 1L summer internship is the capstone to the first year of law school. While full-time jobs in these areas are few, unpaid summer internships will be more plentiful.
The vast majority of first-year summer jobs are unpaid. Big firms seldom hire 1Ls anymore—experience has shown them that most 1L summer associates end up going to the firms where they spend their 2L summers. Smaller firms usually look first for 2Ls as well because the 2Ls will have had some of the substantive courses that will make them more useful to the firm, such as evidence, corporations, tax, wills and trusts, real estate transactions, or intellectual property, to name a few.

So with most of the positions unpaid, you may not need to put in full-time hours to get internship credit and can do something non-legal on the side to make some bucks.
Working for a judge is a great way to improve your legal writing skills, see lots of good and not-so-good attorneys in action, and see how law is made.
You may also decide you want to pursue a post-graduate judicial clerkship. Many of you have worked in a professional, and perhaps even in a legal, environment before law school. Your first summer legal job is a great place to begin building your legal network. The timeline for applying for summer intern-ships begins December 1 and continues through May.
The vast majority of employers hire between February and May yes, even that late! Judges tend to hire early. Government agencies and non-profits have later deadlines. Small firms will hire closer to summer when they know their needs. Be sure to have your resume and cover letter reviewed by your career office—these folks are the experts. Since the hiring time frame for 1Ls is shorter than for 2Ls, apply broadly.
Use the winter break to meet with alums in practice areas that interest you. Your career office can give you alumni contacts in various practice areas. Join local and national bar associations as well as affinity bar associations, and attend lunches and other events, including continuing legal education events.
A few words about the new ABA rule that allows each law school to determine whether to allow credit for paid internships: Given the additional hoops private employers will have to jump through to allow credit, the option may not be as popular with employers as it is with students.
The really good news is that every 1L who works with his or her career office will get a summer job. Home Career Advice Blog. You are a first-year law student, your exposure to the practice of law has been minimal, you have few, if any, discernable legal skills, and the substance of your first semester curriculum has, on a practical level, prepared you for precious little.
Odd as it may seem, a good number of employers, particularly law firms, are fully cognizant that 1Ls lack the legal background necessary to contribute to their bottom line but are equally ready to hired them. But appraising a 1L candidate is tricky.
Any good hiring partner will have a comprehensive 1L strategy as it differs greatly from 2L hiring. What keeps hiring partners up at night is the concern that even after intensive vetting, interviewing, and assessment, things can still go wrong. The greatest fear of all is that, once the 1L student begins work, it slowly and agonizingly becomes clear that he has the legal prowess of a rutabaga.
Why do employers take the risk? They do it because they are aiming to find the best, the brightest, the most talented law students before the competition does. If an organization searches for 1Ls they most likely do so because they are forward-thinking and approach hiring with vision and ingenuity.
Another reason firms might decide to engage 1Ls is to get their name out on a campus where they have had little luck recruiting 2Ls. Yet another reason to hire from the 1L ranks is to round out an already established 2L class. Employers aim, but often come up short, for a balanced class composition. A few of the reasons for a need to supplement a 2L class include low response rate in a particular practice area, need for a specific background or certain credentials and to achieve better diversity.
As a law firm recruiter I always made certain that the recruitment committee knew exactly what was needed and why. Over the years we were able to attract an impressive crop of top-flight 1L students. Our firm consistently enjoyed enormous hiring successes, of both 1L and 2L summer associates.
We were strategic and committed and that was realized in our numbers. Focus on Potential As a 1L it is crucial that you understand the goals of your interviewers. Get ahead of the game by considering where an organization looking to hire a 1L is most likely to focus. An obvious answer, for anyone with limited experience, is potential. Put together some thoughts or stories illustrating circumstances where your potential became evident over a period of time.
Perhaps you were able to acclimate to a job or situation quickly and become a valuable participant in that setting. Maybe you were surprised when you were asked to help the little league basketball coach when she had to miss three games.
Coaching was not something you had done before, but you dove in, gave it your best and led the team to victory. Put some thought into this and you should have no problem coming up with some illustrative examples of your own. This is a terrific resource that unequivocally should be put to use. I often hear from my career services friends that far too many students never even show their faces in CSO. This is insane.
The career services staff knows the market and they have a solid handle on where the 1L jobs are. Career services can help guide you through the various decisions that continually come up as you progress through the multi-layered hiring process. An added bonus is they know people. It is not unheard of for a CSO member to place a call on your behalf or, in some cases, even assist with setting up an informal meeting with a practicing attorney.
When you make that first visit to CSO, tell them you would like to take advantage of as many mock interviews as allowed. The obvious reason for this is to give you vital interviewing practice. Keep in mind, however, at the same time you are putting yourself in a position of potentially getting a job. It is not unheard of for a law student to receive an invitation to the office of a mock interviewer at the end of the interview.
Network, Network, Network Building your network is yet another critical step you must take as you embark on your job search.
